A Closer Look at RNA Synthesis

Let’s use the test tube model to make some RNA!  This process is called transcription. The RNA is transcribed (or put together) based on the sequence in the DNA (the DNA template).

Questions

Please answer the questions below.

SAQ: Your challenge is to make RNA based on a DNA template.  What buttons did you need to press to make it happen?  What does that mean about what is necessary to make RNA?

There’s a bug somewhere in the program!  Check out all the readouts after your RNA is made and write what needs to change in the space below.

Let’s fix the bug!  If you want to change something in the code, open the NetLogo code bar.  If you want to change something in the readouts, click on the lock icon on the top left to change the mode to “authoring” (you’ll need to change it back before you’re done).  What did you do to fix the bug?  Did it work?

SAQ: Compare and contrast the process of making RNA to the replication of DNA. Write down at least one similarity and one difference.

Think back to our original question: how close are we to answering how the twins got their different hair colors? Does this information about DNA and RNA help?  If so, how?  If not, what else do we need to find out?

Discuss the last 2 questions with your classmates and write down any observations or insights (different from your own) that they have below.
